Terschelling Island

With a length of 30 kilometers and an average width of 3.5 kilometers the island of Terschelling
offers a very diverse and captivating scenery. The northern shore is bounded by a 30 kilometer long beach,
which can be 1 kilometer wide at certain times.

A rather wide sand dune belt seperates the beach from the land. First the younger, not completely overgrown dunes, then the interior dunes, which are covered by much denser vegetation.
At the beginning of the 20th century part of the former sand dunes area was replanted with trees. Meanwhile this area has grown to a dense forest.
The transition from sand dunes to the Polder is characterized by a scenery of tree fringed properties.
Further south the wide Polder expands. Soil composition and a hilly landscape lend the Polder a much diversified natural plant cover.
Another characteristic feature of the Polder of Terschelling are the occassional flocks of ducks ascending from the fields. A dyke ring seperates the tideland and sea from the Polder.
Terschelling is connected by ferry boat from Harlingen. The boat takes 2 hours for the trip. There is also an Express Boat which makes the journey within 45 minutes.
